DIY Space

A project to revitalize an abandoned university campus using the tools and methods of tactical urbanism.

The Goal

To reimagine and modernize the campus of Chernihiv Polytechnic National University through participatory design, tactical urbanism, and street art.

The Process

Over the past decade, grassroots initiatives that transform urban environments using bottom-up tools have been on the rise globally. One such method is DIY urbanism (from the English “do it yourself”) — a key practice within the framework of tactical urbanism. Our project, “DIY Space”, became a local example of this approach in Chernihiv.

We reimagined and revitalized the campus of Chernihiv Polytechnic National University through the efforts of young urbanists, artists, and designers. Using participatory research, co-design, tactical urbanism, and street art, we created a vibrant creative hub. This sparked momentum for new urban initiatives and creative public spaces across the city.

The Results
  • DIY School for 20 students.
  • 6 hands-on workshops.
  • The “DIY Festival” was held with over 500 participants.
  • 1 research study conducted.
  • A series of small architectural forms was constructed.
  • 3 murals created.

This project is a great example of collaboration between education and a civil society organization. What we see here is the outcome of the summer school and the work of the students.
